Recognition memory can be assessed using the novel object recognition task.  Memory impairment is a symptom of multiple neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, mental retardation, and Huntington disease.  Rodents tend to explore novel rather than familiar objects when presented simultaneously in a habituated environment.  The novel object recognition task measures the preference towards a novel versus familiar object as a measure of memory.
