The forced swim test is a model of depression in which antidepressant pharmaceuticals can be screened for efficacy.  Animals are placed in a cylindrical tank filled with water and time spent floating (immobility) versus struggling (climbing, swimming) are measured.  Immobility is thought to be an index of a depressive-like state which can be reduced in response to antidepressant treatment.
